About Us

Since 1965, Tanglewood Monday Club has been a welcoming social space for adults with learning disabilities, offering activities, friendships, and a sense of community—all run by dedicated volunteers.

What is Tanglewood Monday Club?

Tanglewood Monday Club is a vibrant social club for adults with learning disabilities, dedicated to fostering a sense of community, friendship, and fun. Established in 1965 by Harrow Council social workers, our club held its very first meeting on October 4th of that year.

This year, we are proud to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of creating a welcoming and inclusive space for our members. It’s a testament to the incredible spirit of our community and the dedication of everyone involved.

Since 1970, the club has been run entirely by volunteers who generously give their time to make Tanglewood the special place it is today. With 60 current members, we continue to offer a range of activities and opportunities that help enrich lives and build lasting connections.

Tanglewood Monday Club is more than just a social club; it’s a community built on care, inclusion, and the shared joy of coming together. We look forward to many more years of making a difference!

What do we do?

At Tanglewood Monday Club, we provide a lively and welcoming space where adults with learning disabilities can come together to enjoy social activities, make friends, and have fun.

Music and dancing are at the heart of our club, creating an energetic and inclusive atmosphere every Monday. Beyond that, we offer a variety of activities to suit everyone’s interests, including two pool tables, darts, table tennis, Wii games, and arts and crafts.

We also love to celebrate! Throughout the year, we organize exciting “party nights” for occasions like Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and even special birthday parties. These events are always a highlight, bringing everyone together for unforgettable moments of joy and laughter.

Whether it’s a quiet game of pool or a lively dancefloor, there’s something for everyone at Tanglewood Monday Club!

Finance

Tanglewood Monday Club is an independent charity, relying entirely on donations, fundraising, and a small weekly subscription fee from our members—currently £5 per session.

Running the club is no small feat, with annual expenses reaching around £15,000. Almost half of this goes towards covering the rent for our club room. Every contribution helps us continue providing a safe, welcoming space and activities for adults with learning disabilities.

Tanglewood Monday Club is run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers. Many of them have been with us for years, with our current eleven volunteers collectively contributing over 150 years of service to the club. While they are incredibly committed, they are not professionals, so we are unable to provide one-to-one support or accommodate members with challenging behavioral needs.

Our club premises are wheelchair-friendly, and we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. In addition to our weekly activities, Tanglewood offers members a chance to socialize, meet friends, and connect with our volunteers in a friendly and happy atmosphere.

We provide refreshments, including soft drinks and crisps (at a small cost) as well as tea and biscuits free of charge. Please note that alcohol is not permitted. Membership is open to anyone aged 18 and over.

Tanglewood Monday Club is designed to give members some much-needed leisure time away from home, family, and work. To maintain this space for our members, parents, carers, and professionals can only attend by invitation.

Transport

We currently offer a limited amount of transport for our members, which is free of charge at the moment. However, this may need to change as we have recently lost our annual grant from Harrow Council.

We are committed to supporting our members as best we can and will keep everyone updated on any changes to transport arrangements. Your understanding and support are greatly appreciated during this time.
