The final of the club members Pool tournament took place at club on Monday 26th Nov. between Chirag and Christopher. Chirag was appearing in his very first Tanglewood sports final, (although he did win our Strictly Tanglewood dancing event earlier this year). Chris was appearing in his 8th Tanglewood final, four of them in the last 12 months, and was the defending champion. It was a best-of-five-frame match and Chris got off to a flying start and in next to no time was 2 – 0 up. It looked like being the quickest final or record but Chirag performed an amazing fight back and won the next two frames. With the scores level at 2 – 2 everything depended on the fifth and decisive frame – it was a very cagey affair and this frame was by far the longest of the night. Chris was well ahead and only needed to pot the black to win the match when Chirag still had five balls on the table. Undeterred Chirag played some amazing shots with a break of three but he still had two balls left to pot when Chris was left with a golden chance to seal the match with an easy pot on the black, when disaster struck. He potted the black with no problem, but just as he was about to punch the air in delight he watched in horror as the white ball went towards another pocket – we all watched on in disbelief when, what appeared to be in slow motion, the white ball slowly approached pocket dropped. This of course constituted a foul shot and gifted the frame, and the match, to Chirag I have to say I did feel sorry for Chris – he was left devastated – over the final three frames most club members were shouting their support for the underdog and I thought Chris handled the difficult situation admirably. Congratulations to Chirag for winning his first trophy – He played superbly throughout the tournament and beat some very good players just to reach the final.
